The last two weeks have been… well… a whirlwind! I think I speak for all of us when I say that. Just two weeks ago we were all excited about the coming of spring and scheduling of summer events. Now, we are staring a recession, a federal lockdown, and a severe virus directly in the face.
I have come to reflect on just how thin the line between safety and risk really is. More specifically, I have been thinking about all the people in the world who live with this thin line every single day. I think about places like the middle east where women’s rights are non-existstent. I think about certain areas of Africa where bodies are mutilated for “religious practice.” I think about orphans all over the world who may never feel the love of a mother. There are many more examples.
My prayer for us in America is that we remember these people during this time. We rightfully will be focused on our own communities, but as we navigate the unknown, I pray that we begin to see that the “unknown” is daily part of life for a billions of people. This pandemic hopefully will open our eyes to see that the world is bigger than just us.
As Jesus said in Matthew 22, the greatest commandments are to (1) love God with all your heart and (2) love your neighbor as yourself. I am excited for us as we begin to love our neighbors in ways we never knew we could!
