John’s message this morning is clear; Jesus is Lord. John solidifies that Jesus is not just God in nature, but that he is creator of all things. This perhaps explains Jesus’ extraordinary personality. He is the originator of all things. The first chapter of the book of Genesis is riddled with “and God said.” This chapter uses this phrase eight times to be exact. Now, according to John we know that this wasn’t just God, but Jesus was there too!
Talk to any scientist that studies anatomy, agronomy, or any other natural world discipline and you will be sure to hear marvel when they describe the distinct details that our world contains. Let’s think of a flower for example. A flower serves a very important ecological role. Flowers serve as a source of food for insects, birds, animals and humans. They provide natural medicines for humans. Flowers even aid in the reproduction of other plants by enticing pollinators. In the midst of the ecological purpose of flowers they are still beautifully symmetrical. They provide comfort to a grieving widow. They provide insight to a young man’s love for a partner. The order and design behind a simple flower is astonishing.
Jesus created this world. Jesus created this world to be loved by his prize possession, us. Our current pandemic has created an environment that makes remembering Jesus’ creation very difficult. It’s easy right now to not think of God as creator, but John 1 this morning reminds us there is no avoiding God’s beautiful world. I leave you with this word of encouragement from John,
“What has come into being 4 in him was life,[a] and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
Jesus created life. Look at the sky today and believe and trust that this creation was created so that your life may have light. There is no darkness that will overcome this light. We are safe in the hands of our creator.
