25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
These are the typical stages in my food preparation: (1) cook a meal that is far too large, (2) convince myself I will eat the left overs, (3) forget about left overs, (4) throw away spoiled food in two weeks. I have changed my habits during Covid-19. I am actively trying to not waste my leftovers. I have learned to appreciate the “never go bad” foods. The canned meats, soups, vegetables, etc. But wouldn’t it be nice if we had fresh food that never spoiled?
Jesus in John 6 compares himself to exactly that. He says, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.” Which he then goes on to say that he will conveniently give to you. This sounds amazing! Now imagine there is a magical grocery store whose food never spoils. What would you do for this fresh, amazing food that never spoil? No more social distancing in the grocery lines. No more worrying about whether or not you will find any bagels. No more overpriced eggs. What would you give for that?
The truth is that we would probably give quite a bit. We might drive a considerable distance to that grocery store. Maybe we would be willing to spend more money. Or, maybe we would even order it online without two day shipping (oh no!). In any case, I think we would all sacrifice to receive that magical food.
Yet, when it comes to Jesus’ food we are vastly unwilling to sacrifice. Jesus requires that we spend quiet time praying with him. Jesus requires that we spend time studying his life and his ministry. Jesus requires we spend time getting to know other people. Is it the lack of belief we have? Is it our busy schedules? Is it the lack of appreciation? That is for us to work out individually. I do know this; it is worth it. The taste of Christ’s bountiful grace when you have just failed. The sniff of his fresh baked love when you feel alone. His food last forever and it is worth sacrificing everything to find.
