7 “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? 8 Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? 9 Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” – LUKE 17
There is more work to be done! I am not sure any of us like hearing those words. Yet, this morning that is what Jesus is telling us. There is always more work in God’s kingdom.
Jesus in his normal Jesus way uses an example that was incredibly relevant to them. Slavery for Americans in the 21st century is not an everyday experience, but for Jews in the ancient world it was. These disciples would have been very understanding of this text. Quite truthfully, it is a simple one. Slaves did not rest before their tasks were done. Neither should we.
Oh how fitting this passage is on a sleepy Wednesday morning in the middle of a lock down. What else can we do? I ask myself this question all the time, but we know that there is always something extra we can do. I challenge you as Jesus would today. Do not put your comfy sweatpants on until you have done one new/different task for the Lord. Maybe you have not read your bible for a while. Perhaps your prayer life seems to drag on. Or maybe, you need to tell your children that God loves them. Maybe you need to remind your spouse that God is in control. Whatever it is, make sure you do not rest until it is done.
