10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. Jonah 3:10
This one verse shows the love that exists in God’s heart for humanity. Can you imagine someone constantly hurting you for decades and then with one apology you fully forgive them and actually let them continue on? This is exactly what God did to the Ninevites. God honored His own character. He honored their repentance. We and the government would never forgive a cold-blooded murderer who vowed to never do it again, but God mercifully and gracefully did with Nineveh.
This shows an interesting relationship between repentance and God. God is not obligated to forgive us because we repent. God forgives us because our repentance appeals to God’s character of love, justice, mercy, and grace.
Isn’t this a great message for a Friday? I am sure you are tired from your work week. Schools started this week. The weather felt nicer, but still hot. Mid- August is just an odd time of year. Yet, in the middle of fatigue we find a God with character that refreshes and rejuvenates us. This is the grace of Jesus in action. Rest today. Take time tomorrow for family. Tell your wife or husband that you love them unconditionally. Everyone needs to know they are loved.
