15 Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”[i] meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise. – Galatians 3:15-18
Broken promises sting to the core. Most of us face our first broken promises from our parents. I was promised one too many trips to six flags. These types of promises sting, but they do not nearly hurt as breaking a promise to heal and save you. Usually, there is a reason for a broken promise. Most usually as a child these promises are unfulfillable. For example, six flags is expensive! Other times, promises are broken because the promise maker has been wronged in some way. God was wronged for thousands of years following the promise He made to Abraham. Nonetheless, God kept his promise.
After His interaction with Abraham, God was wronged time and time again. First, it was Abraham’s family himself (think Lot and his wife). Next, it was the sons of Abraham. Eventually, the selfishness of the great-grandsons of Abraham were enslaved in Egypt. God saved them nonetheless. Moses betrayed God several times. So much so, he was not even allowed into the promise land. Then came the judges of Israel. Betrayal, selfishness, and hate was rampant in Israel. Nonetheless, God saved them. No matter how unfaithful we are to God, He will AND HAS saved us.
This morning I was rather impatient with God. Usually, I spend about an hour in prayer. I just couldn’t do it today. I find myself worried about selling our house, having a child, etc. These worries are valid, but do you know what my worries do not do? My worries and fears do not negate, deflect, or destroy God’s promise made to me. In fact, God has made a promise to all of us.
God promises that for those who love Him all things will work for Good. God promises that those who believe in His son Jesus will receive eternal life. These promises are HUGE! Wouldn’t it sting to have these promises broken???? It would not just sting. It would literally destroy you.
Praise be to our God in heaven above. HE NEVER BREAKS A PROMISE!
HALLELUJAH!
